we learn piano!

I just wanted to show myself, since I just joined this community.
I am one of those who is attempting to learn to play piano by myself. I am currently practicing by playing Yann Tiersen, and I feel I'm making good progress. My problem is that I can play with one hand at a time, but not both. If I try, one of my hands will seem quite drunk, whilst the other plays like I want it to (depends on which hand I concentrate on). Does anybody have an exercise or some of the sort, that could help me do two things at once? So I could play with both hands at once, like I am supposed to?

we learn piano!

Hey everyone, since pianists got deleted, I thought I'd start up another community for us fellow piano players who have nowhere else to go.

Please join pianistas and spread the word! :)

Hi [Jan. 27th, 2008|02:30 pm]
we learn piano!

[Current Mood |cheerful]

I'm not sure how often this community is posted in or looked at, but it's the only one that seemed like it could help. You see, I am attempting to learn piano (by myself), and am having some issues. So, could someone please, please attempt to explain or give me a link to something that explains in great detail the circle of fifths? Please?

I'm currently using this site's workbook, and am on chapter four.

If no one can help I guess I'll just pretend to know what's going on (not useful, but I could try). Thank you very much for any assistance you may be able to give.

Also, any tips for remembering the notes would be nice, that's still a bit of a struggle for me. However, this is not as important as my first request. Again, thank you!

Introduction, Voicings [Jan. 3rd, 2008|03:51 am]
we learn piano!

Hi everyone! My name is Charles and I'm a musician! (yay!)

I'm majoring in Jazz Performance at FIU in Miami, FL. I play guitar, I sing, and I can fake some piano! (yay!)

My first question is the following- I know music theory well enough to sit at a piano and play in any key, and even play through changes at slow tempos. But I'm having a SEVERE problem in what I think are my voicings. (I say think because I have humility here..)

I practice climbing up the piano doing different inversions for simple maj/min/dom/maj7/min7 chords in every key, thinking this may somehow help my problem, but I must have some major gap in my learning because while in the middle of even simple diatonic progressions I find my fingers stumbling around to find a particular inversion within the register of where my hands were at for the previous chord and I can't seem to lock on to it in real time.

I know not ALL right-hand work are simply inversions. Where can I learn to be more creative with my voicings as to better help me choose which notes to play in songs? Is there any kind of method to it? Or is it simply practicing until the point that your ear takes over? (That would mean a few years of more practice before I get to that level.) Any websites or book recommendations are appreciated!

My second question- My left hand... oh MY LEFT HAND. What a pain sometimes. I can't make it sound good when I'm playing simple Beatles tunes. Of course almost all the music I read is from chord charts and NOT notation. Any ideas on what the left hand should be doing most of the time for these sort of simple progressions? Right now, I usually have it only hitting the root in octaves or octaves with the fifth squished in there, but sometimes... that just ends up redundant and gross. Suggestions?

THANKS to all pianists in the world! YOU ROCK and so does your instrument.

Well hallo thar! [Sep. 27th, 2007|12:17 pm]
we learn piano!

So. Hi! I've been playing the piano for 5 years (not really playing though, just messing around with the piano) but it's not because I took those one-on-one lessons with an instructor. I never did! The schools I went to made it mandatory for its students to know how to play the piano, read notes, the basic stuff. So i went through that for 5 years. Then on the 6th year, i stopped. We weren't requred anymore. I took up playing the piano again a year ago, and it's been another 5 years since I last played the piano. So this is going to be my 2nd year of playing the piano.

The thing is, I'm terrible at the pressing keys thing. I can read the notes (albeit slowly) and understand most of the marks in pieces, but I can't bring myself to play the pieces that only use the chords. I've been self-taught since last year, and well, I find that I can play a piece (I learn slow) if I hear it over and over again, and with GAZILLIONS of trials and errors. The problem is I'd really like it if I could learn quicker. Aaaand.

Yeah. So that's my piano profile. :D

i have been playing the piano for  about 5,6 years
if you need to improve sight-reading, the best songs are Jamie Cullum's,
because they are not that hard, epescially if you listen to him
just general pop-songs with piano parts are good, because they are not of a particuarlly high standard
just a little tip

i've been reading everyone's posts and it looks like so many of you have so much experience playing piano! i've only been playing for a year so i'm not the best, but i'm pretty good. i took a piano class in my first year of high school last year. my teacher was so good and taught me so much that you wouldn't even know i have only been playing for a year. does anyone here know who Yanni is? i think he is the greatest piano player of today. my dream is to get as good as he is!

we learn piano!

Hi! My name is Karen and I've been playing the piano for over 10 years. I don't practice as often as I should be due to me getting distracted with other things. I'm ok at sight reading but I don't compose my own stuff. I enjoy playing classical the most.

Nice to meet everybody!
